MISSION STATEMENT Basset Hound Rescue & Adoption, Inc of San Diego is a 501(c)(3) non-profit rescue and referral organization dedicated to placing unwanted Basset Hounds into suitable homes, and preventing unwanted bassets from overloading the shelter system. Towards attaining those goals, Basset Hound Rescue & Adoption of San Diego promotes responsible dog ownership by educating the public in the selection, care and training of Basset Hounds. Basset Hound Rescue & Adoption of San Diego works cooperatively with reputable breeders, animal shelters, breed clubs, animal behaviorists and veterinarians and individuals to accomplish these goals. We are a volunteer run organization. HISTORY Jerri Caswell organized the San Diego chapter of Basset Hound Rescue after discovering the nearest chapter was in Los Angeles.  Jerri's first rescue occurred in February 1991 when she received a telephone call reporting that an abandoned Basset Hound was stuck in a ditch behind someone's backyard. On the right is a picture of General after he was cleaned up and became the first adoptee. The rest is, as they say, history. Jerri, with the help of her husband, Michael, her mother, Nan, and a group of dedicated volunteers have found new and loving homes for about 100 Bassets each year since that first rescue. THE RESCUE PROCESS About 60 percent of rescued Bassets come to Basset Hound Rescue directly from the owner. Owners relinquish bassets for a variety of reasons: relocation, not enough time for the dog, etc. The other 40 percent come from the animal shelters in San Diego and surrounding areas. The shelters call Jerri when they feel that the dog is not suitable for their adoption process due to age or medical needs. The rescued Basset is first taken to the veterinarian where it undergoes a thorough examination. The dog receives any necessary shots, medications, and surgery, and is spayed or neutered if healthy. The Basset then goes to live with a foster family who provides love and care while also evaluating the dog's personality and behavior. This evaluation helps in determining a suitable home environment for the dog.
