OUR GIANT EXTENDED FAMILY

In years past all rescued Bassets stayed with Jerri's Bassets - Fred and Clementine. They welcomed rescued Bassets with wagging tails and always provided generous amounts of play therapy. Jerri and Mike's dear Clementine passed away in 2003 and was followed to the bridge a short time later by Fred.

In 2003 a spunky new youngster named Elliot joined the Caswell family. He had a tough time in the beginning and spent some time in the hospital with pneumonia, but was nursed back to health. Elliot grew up to be a strapping young Basset who loved to run like the wind at dog beach and play with all the big dogs. Unfortunately Elliot's time with us was short and he passed away suddenly in 2007.

Elliot
The world works in mysterious ways though because only a short few days after Elliot's untimely passing, Jerri received a call from the shelter. Evidently someone in Arkansas was getting shut down for running an illegal puppy mill so he put as many puppies as he could in his truck and made for San Diego. He got in to town here and was pulled over and the more than 50 puppies were found. We arranged to take 1 basset, 2 bulldogs and 4 beagles. Of course the Basset puppy took an immediate liking to Jerri and Mike. As they say the rest is history. The little puppy now named Myles is growing like crazy and is the new prince of Del Cerro.

Myles arrives in San Diego...and moves in with Mike and Jerri

Over the years San Diego Basset Rescue has placed hundreds of needy Bassets in new homes. Here are just a few of our success stories. If you have adopted from San Diego Basset Rescue and would like to be included on this page, please send an e-mail with a picture attached (JPEG format please) and some information about your Basset.

 ElizabethBarney

Elizabeth & Barney

Elizabeth (top) was "skin & bones" when she was rescued from the shelter. She adjusted quickly to her new home and is now a healthy, happy and dainty young lady. An actress in Hollywood gave gave Barney (bottom) up for adoption. A chance meeting was arranged and he and Elizabeth became instant friends. Elizabeth invited Barney to come home to live with her. She whispered in his ear on the way home that there are rules in the house -- like coming when called, no going on the furniture, no sleeping on the bed, etc. -- but she generally does not follow the rules and this makes everyone smile and comment that she is a true Basset Hound. Barney & Elizabeth have been inseparable ever since. Barney has taken on the role of watch dog and stations himself in the front window with Elizabeth at his side. Dieter and Maryann provide a loving safe home for their two little ones who return their love and constantly provide enjoyment, companionship and laughter.

Tess

Tess

Beautiful eight-year-old Tess was adopted from Basset Hound Rescue 3 years ago. She's loving and loyal and quite protective. She has a reputation for getting on tables (in a single bound) and for sitting down in the middle of crosswalks. The entire neighborhood knows her as the dog who gets carried home on her daily walks. Tess has a great howl which she uses to alert the neighbors to the fact that she's had her weekly bath. She is very clever and has her owner, Kaelin, totally devoted to her.

Sammy

Sammy

Samantha was rescued in 1993. She loves to eat, get belly rubs and make strange Basset sounds whenever she gets excited. Lounging on the couch, sleeping in front of a roaring fire and following the sun around the house are her favorite pastimes (must be a Basset Hound thing). She was so grateful to be rescued that a few years later she found a homeless Terrier mix (Scruffy) living in the streets and invited him home. Now her adopted parents have two dogs.

 Beau

Beau

Beau was rescued in 1999. He is a very sweet Basset, so sweet that his foster family decided to make him a permanent member of the family.

 Beauregard

 Beauregard

Here is Beauregard with his new buddy Barnaby and his new adopted Dad. His previous owners took him to the vet to be put to sleep because they didn't want to pay for the surgery to treat an abscess from a fox tail. Basset Rescue stepped in, paid for the treatment and fostered Beauregard until a he was placed with a new and responsible family. This is definitely one we saved from deaths
door!

Gordo

  Gordo

Gordo was adopted in September 1999. He is a big beautiful Basset who needed a nice relaxing retirement home to enjoy the golden years. He found just what he was looking for and is now loving life in beautiful Santa Barbara.

Roscoe

 Roscoe

Her is Roscoe and his baby, Rylie. He loves all of his 7 kids, but he thinks this smallest one is his personal popsicle. He happily slurps her little, bald head on a daily basis! Roscoe is quite the "wild child" and his good fun often results in echoes of "No, Roscoe!" through the house throughout the day. He really tries to be good, but sometimes he just can't help himself. Some days he's an angel, and some days he's constantly in the doghouse.

 Winston

 Winston

Winston (a.k.a. Rusty) is doing really well in his new home. He is the sweetest best behaved boy and is loved by his forever family. Winston's feline family members are still not thrilled with him; slowly but surely they're getting more relaxed with his presence. The youngest cat though likes to get Winston to chase him up and down the hallway.

 Betty Lou

Betty Lou (a.k.a. Honey) ended up with our rescue because her original family had a young child who turned out to be very allergic to dogs. She is the sweetest little Basset puppy and ended up in a great home. This is her family's second adoption from SDBHR. Betty spends her days lounging in the office of Cini Jewelry in Solana Beach and just loves being the shop dog. Next time you are in the Cedros Design District of Solana Beach, stop by for a visit and say hi to Betty Lou.

 Milo

Milo (formerly known as Buster) was adopted in July of 1999 when he was 2½. He'd had two homes prior to ours and his story is a little sketchy. He was originally kept in an outside pen with two other large dogs, and was not well cared for. He now lives in Stevenson Ranch, CA and is a companion to another Basset named Lolly. Lolly pretty much bosses Milo around, but they are great pals and love to romp and play every day around 4 before dinner time. Milo is enormous for a basset - long and tall, but such a loving, sweet, cuddly guy. He loves his chair, as you can see in the picture above. That dog embodies comfort. When that picture was taken he was in dream land, snoring like a truck driver, but completely blissful.
