APPLICATION
If you are interested in adopting, please follow
one of the links below to complete our application. We almost
always place all of our Bassets in homes in the San Diego area.
If you live outside of California or in the Northern or Central
regions of the state, please see the links page of our web site
to find the web site for a Basset rescue group in your local
area.
THE ADOPTION
PROCESS
The search for an adoptive family
begins with a review of the "Prospective Adoption Families"
waiting list, and with a posting of information to our web site.
Potential new owners are first
interviewed over the phone by Jerri. Her questions help determine
if the people are good candidates for adopting a dog, especially
a basset hound. She tries to match the personality of the dog
as closely as she can with the family. Many of the rescued dogs
have led pretty difficult lives and Jerri wants to make sure
they are adopted by people who will truly cherish them and make
them part of the family.
After the phone interview the
family visits the Basset at the foster home to see if the personalities
match, but the dog will not go home with the adoptive family
that day. This is to prevent anyone from making an emotional
or impulsive decision about adopting a Basset. There is a 24-hour
waiting period in which the adoptive family decides if the dog
is right for them. If the family decides that the Basset is not
the dog of their dreams they will continue to meet other available
Bassets until the right match is made.
Once a match is made and before
the dog is placed a thorough house and yard check are conducted
to make sure that they are both a safe, secure, and Basset-friendly
environment. A dog will not be placed in a yard that is not securely
fenced.
When the Basset goes to live
with its new family, an adoption agreement is signed and a $200
donation is given to Basset Hound Rescue. The fee goes toward
the cost to spay or neuter the dog, vaccinations, any needed
medical care and the first year's license. |
